Thousands of People have learned rosemaling from Helen Elizabeth (Bowman) Black (1915-1988), both from her books and in her classes. Born in St. Paul Minnesota, she studied, taught, and wrote about Scandinavian folk art from 1970-1988. She served as an artist in residence at the American Swedish Institute, where she also taught Swedish folk art painting.
